Dan was recently interviewed by the site El Universal on growing up on the Harry Potter Set. He talked about how much he has matured as an actor, how he feels about the end of the series, especially Harry and Ginny’s relationship, and how fans perceive him upon meeting. Here is the translation below:
Do you feel that you have had to become a man through your character?
Not necessarily. I think we have the knowledge I have gained from this saga that began long ago.
Harry Potter has matured, have you grown in the acting sense?
Yes, I think or hope it has. At least when I did the movie My Boy Jack it changed me, helped me to feel that I was growing as an actor. There I had to be more natural and relaxed.
This time Harry Potter has to face another important death (Albus Dumbledore). How did you act in that sad moment of the story?
As an actor it is hard, because on this point each one of the previous movies he finishes with the death of the death of central characters and in some way affect you. I do not know how you take when you see that part, I made my best effort, and humbly, I think it was good.
Of any way is like a double tragedy, the fact of to have suffered the loss of actor Richard Harris and now to feel that in the film to Sir Michael Gambon…
Well, it is relative. Remember that Michael returns in the seventh book in a moment of the last chapter, returning like a ghost.
There has been religious sectors that do not share the history of Harry Potter, even called it “a wrong kind of hero.”
Really? Very interesting. There was someone once told me that he was confused with Harry Potter because of the difficulties in relationships. In any case, stories, novels, books that are made for people to enjoy, they change the mood, feel good. Some media enjoy saying ridiculous things.
Now Harry Potter has a girlfriend in this movie…
Yes, marvelous. I think the great influx of Ginny (Bonnie Wright) to the story. Believe it or not this relationship is complex within the film because it is Harry’s best friend Ron (Weasley) and before she had gone with Dean Thomas. There are funny moments included.
How felt upon reading the end of the book?
It is obvious that at this point because we all know that Harry marries Ginny and has children. It was a very sweet end. I am convinced that everyone was satisfied with everything, even if you read the end of the first book, the context of the history and how Harry was living its life, is fascinating.
At this point in the saga how do you feel with the rest the cast? Are they still professionals first, or rather is a kind of family?
When you live together more than seven years with them they become a part of you. Professionally, you can refresh each time.
Wouldn’t it bother you when all the Harry Potter movies are finished that you cannot be removed of the character?
I don’t believe it. I am playing other roles that I have been offered and I am anxious to carry out, reading scripts. Until they no longer see me as Harry Potter.
Will you not miss being Harry Potter?
I will be a little sad. Not just being Harry Potter, but to all the ones that participated in the movie.
How are you asked for autographs on the street, as Daniel or Harry?
In Greece they called me Dan, which is a good sign. Kids small as ten or eleven years old also call me Harry. Nevertheless, I feel that people have known to understand that I am an actor that plays a character.
